Elk-Wapiti
An Elk-Wapiti starts its life in the fall, weighing up to 35 lbs at birth and up to five times that by the end of their first winter. Male elk (called bulls) stand approximately five feet high from shoulder to hoof. The antlers of the bull elk grow faster than any other kind of bone. Increased daylight elevates the testosterone in the animal’s blood which triggers the growth of antlers, gaining up to one inch a day during summer. Elk are also known as Wapiti, a name given to them by the Shawnee Indians meaning, “White Rump”. The elk population is well and thriving, maintaining over 7000,000 in the U.S. alone
