Mama Bear & Her Cubs

In mid-winter and mid-hibernation, the female black bear will give birth to two or three blind, toothless cubs. Once born, she will continue her hibernation while the cubs, weighing six to twelve ounces at birth, will continue to nurse until the spring. Th cubs are weaned from their mother after approximately seven moths, but will continue to remain with her until their second summer. When it is time for the other to mate once again, the yearlings are sent off to discover their own territories and fend for themselves.
