Coaster Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout are native to the Pacific Ocean and North American rivers and lakes west of the Rocky Mountains.  Rainbow Trout are unusual in that although they can spend their entire life in fresh water, they are capable of migrating to sea water when conditions are right, though they must return to fresh water to breed.  “Rainbows,” as they are affectionately called, living in large lakes or salt water are referred to as “Steelhead” trout.  They tend to be larger than those living in streams.  Most Steelhead Trout return from the ocean each spring or fall to spawn in the same stream where they were hatched.   Spawning Trout are characterized by having a darker coloration.  The popularity of this fish for game fishing has caused them to be introduced into streams and lakes all over North America.
